Hiking from Santo Stefano di Sessanio to Rocca Calascio in L’Aquila province, Abruzzo.

Santo Stefano di Sessanio is a medieval town inside the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park in the Abruzzo region, in southern Italy. From this town, we’ll hike to Rocca Calascio, a medieval fortress in the highest region of the Apennines. On this tour, we’ll spend the whole day exploring this fantastic area in Italy.

The hike will take us through Campo Imperatore, a beautiful alpine meadow above Gran Sasso Massif. While hiking, we’ll contemplate the stunning landscapes of the Apennines and get to see some of the lovely local fauna. Apart from the nature hike, we’ll also have time to explore Santo Stefano and Rocca Calascio, an amazing historical landmark. At the end of the day we will take a tour of the beautiful streets of Santo Stefano di Sessanio where it is possible to buy local products including the small and very tasty Lentil of Santo Stefano, natural soaps, fine wools.

13 Km 300 m. one-way climb.

5/6 hours walk including stops

The view overlooks the Valle del Tirino and the Piana di Navelli and a short distance away is the superb plain of Campo Imperatore. The walk does not present great difficulties but still requires some physical training.

Don’t forget to bring: backpack, food and water, change of clothes and trekking shoes.
